Blog The Art of Belonging: My Story _ Baani Simar Kaur Let's be real, university life can be a bit too much sometimes. Between all the lectures, uncountable CIAs and trying to figure out what you really want to do with your future, finding your place is the answer. For me, that place was the Creative Committee of the Student Welfare Office. For as long as I can remember, I've had a soft spot for art. It is a passion that was sparked by my parents, so finding a group of people I relate with, was a refreshing change. Although I was anxious and excited during the committee audition and interview, it felt like home when I entered the committee meetings and work sessions. It is a place that celebrates creativity rather than merely encouraging it. We create experiences and transform concepts into glittering realities in addition to decorating for events. Of course, there are moments of controlled chaos, especially on the day before the events, but that’s where the real fun happens. Brainstorming sessions that turn into fun art sessions, late night set-ups, and the occasional (ahem) paint spill on an almost finished project, are all a part of the creative processes and the results are always worth it. Amidst all the chaos, there are shared laughs that are truly special. For a long time, I'd been hesitant to share my art, with others, beyond my canvas. The idea of putting my work out there for the world to see felt intimidating, but being surrounded by such a supportive and creative community gave me the push I needed. The encouragement from my committee members, along with the unwavering support of my family and friends, helped me to finally launch my Instagram art account this January. It's been a truly incredible journey! From receiving heartwarming and encouraging comments to getting my first commission, the experience has been nothing short of amazing. But more than anything, it's the connections I've made here that I cherish the most. The committee has become a source of friendship, mentorship, and inspiration for me. I've met some truly wonderful people who share my passion and understand the creative process. Honestly, I was a bit nervous about working in a group at first. I'm used to doing things on my own. But seeing how a simple suggestion can turn into something brilliant, and how laughter can break a creative block? It has made me realise how much I was missing out. I have now come to understand that it’s all about finding your tribe, accepting the challenges and celebrating the victories together. Belonging, I realized, is not a destination, but a journey. It's a practice, a daily choice to nurture connections and cultivate self-acceptance. f you've ever felt like expressing your creativity, I encourage you to make a move. Find your community, welcome the support, and let your passion lead the way for you. And if you'd like to see my art, you can check out my Instagram @thesimartistictouch .
